In the World of Warcraft, a blacksmith has the ability to create a number of weapons, pieces of armor, and other types of items. Blacksmithing is one of the primary professions, and it’s also one of the more expensive ones in the game. However, a good WoW blacksmith guide can help you learn how to make the most out of blacksmithing without spending too much.

Why Blacksmithing?
A blacksmith can create some very powerful weapons and armor, and it’s a good profession for those who wear mail or plate armor. Warriors, paladins, and to some lesser extent, shamans and hunters excel as blacksmiths. However, all of the classes can use some of the weapons a blacksmith can make, plus there are other useful items a blacksmith can make like belt buckles and skeleton keys. High level blacksmiths can even add sockets to their gloves and bracers.

Companion Professions
A character can only have two primary professions at once, so if you take blacksmithing, you’ll only be able to take one other. Blacksmithing is almost always paired with mining because blacksmiths will need a very large amount of metal to increase their levels. You can always buy your metal off the auction house, but that will get very expensive—some upper level metals can cost a hundred gold or more per stack. You can always have another character take up mining and supply your blacksmith with the metal he needs. If you do that, your blacksmith can take up any other profession, although you will probably want to stick with one of the gathering professions (herbalism or skinning) since the other professions require more raw materials. Engineering also uses metal, so it may be a good choice, too.

Items Required for Blacksmithing
As a blacksmith, you’ll need to have a blacksmithing hammer in your inventory to create items. For most of the armor and weapons, you’ll also need to be near an anvil. You’ll find anvils in all of the major cities and in many other locations. There are some items that don’t require anvils or a hammer, but those are fairly rare.

To become a blacksmith, visit any of the blacksmithing trainers and speak to them. They will teach you apprentice blacksmithing and a few basic plans. These plans will appear in your blacksmithing menu. You’ll see that they start out in an orange color. This means each time you create one, you’ll gain a blacksmithing skill point. When you’ve gained enough points, these plans will turn yellow. Then they will only sometimes give you a skill point. When they turn green, they rarely increase your blacksmithing level. Finally, gray plans will never give you additional skill points.

At 75 skill points, you’ll have maxed out your apprentice blacksmithing. You then need to visit a trainer learn to be a journeyman blacksmith. Following this, you will need to visit a trainer at 125 skill points to become an expert, 200 to become an artisan, 275 to be a master, and 375 to become a grand master blacksmith.

Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths
When your character reaches level 40 and you have a raised your blacksmithing skill to 200, you can specialize. By completing one of two quests, you can become either a weaponsmith or an armorsmith. Weaponsmiths can create special weapons that bind when created, while armorsmiths have access to special armor that is useable only by the blacksmith who makes it.

A weaponsmith must complete a short quest. While it is short, it does require you to make four different types of items in different quantities (12 total). This requires a lot of materials. After you’ve become a weaponsmith, however, you can then further specialize as either a hammersmith, an axesmith, or a swordsmith. Simply travel to Everlook and speak to one of three different trainers there. They will teach you the desired specialization for free.

Armorsmiths have a longer quest chain to complete. The quests start in either Orgrimmar or Ironforge, and there are twelve steps to the chain. Most of these quests involve making items and turning them in to someone for a new blacksmith plan. After completing the chain, you’ll be able to learn armorsmith plans.

If you decide to change your specialization, it is possible. However, it will cost you a certain amount of gold to change specializations. The higher level you are, the more gold it will cost.

Items Usable by Blacksmiths Only
Many armor and weapons created through blacksmithing can be sold or traded to other players, but not all of them can be. Many of the weaponsmith and armorsmith items are bound to the character as soon as they are created. Skeleton keys, while not bound to the blacksmith who makes them, are useable only by blacksmiths with specific skill levels. These keys can be used to open lockboxes, chests, and doors.

Additional Sockets
At skill level 400, blacksmiths can learn how to add sockets to their bracers and their gloves. They can’t add sockets to other player’s items, however. Adding these sockets lets you place one more gemstone in both your bracers and your gloves. If you decide to drop blacksmithing as a profession, though, you will no longer be able to use these sockets.

Blacksmiths can also make Eternal Belt Buckles. While not blacksmith only (they can be traded and sold), these belt buckles provide an extra socket to belts.

The Blacksmithing Market
You may not find many buyers for your low level blacksmithing weapons and armor, but as you gain more and more plans and level up, you’ll start to see people looking for blacksmithing services.
